I’ve published my thoughts on the state of America for the past several months and have had no response from anyone. When I first opened the blog early this year I had a few comments mostly from friends and family and all positive, but I have had no written comments from anyone in response to my past five or six publications. I poured my heart and soul into those posts and all I heard in response was crickets. Coincidentally, I’ve heard, seen and read almost my exact sentiments expressed by many establish pundits since my postings, which gives me hope that at least some people feel what I’m feeling and my thoughts are not utter nonsense. There appears to be universal energy to save the country and the planet as a habitable place for humans, plants and animals. But at the same time, there is so much powerful energy out there to do the opposite.
I’ve never been involved with Twitter and Instagram but a few weeks ago, I started getting these messages that I had a number of posts on Twitter. At first I ignored it but the number kept growing. I thought somehow people might be responding to my blog on Twitter so I attempted to view the messages. When I did it asked me for a user name and password or to create them if I didn’t have them. Once I finally got to the messages, they were from Donald Trump and his supporters, mostly from Fox News. I had been saying that I wanted to hear the opposition’s point of view in previous posts and boy, did I get them. I have to tell you, they were hard to read. However, read them I did. Every time I opened my computer, the number kept growing. I asked my daughter (who is the tech expert in my family) why I was getting such a one sided response from Twitter. She said I needed to list myself as a follower of some of the people I agree with. She added the names of people she thought were the antithesis of the people I was hearing from, including Hillary Clinton, and I starting hearing from them as well, but still the overwhelming tweets are coming from the far right of the political spectrum.
After reading them, I learned one thing. America is in much more trouble than I ever imagined. After reading the tweets and the responses to them it is clear to me that Americans don’t just disagree with each other on the issues, but we live in completely different realities. I know I’ve said that in the past but I was speaking metaphorically. I’m saying now that we are literally living in to separate realities to point we are incapable of even hearing let alone understanding a dissenting point of view.
Just to be clear, these posts on Twitter had nothing to do with my blog. They were just a blizzard of opinions by all the leaders of both sides. Anyone reading this material is getting a daily dose of propaganda to reinforce party line thinking. I want to say that the propaganda is only coming from the right and the opinions of the left are best supported by facts, except the people in the alternate reality think the same thing about the left. Consequently, we are all at the mercy of the demigods.
I don’t know what to tell you when it comes to we what we all should do about this. I can tell you what I’ve been doing about it. I’ve continued to read the rightwing propaganda with an eye for anything said that I could possibly agree with or that can be supported by legitimate evidence. As a result, I think I’m getting a more grounded understanding of what the facts actually are. While I find them more consistent with what is reported by what the right would call the “liberal media”, I can better detect what I consider to be exaggeration in their reporting. Doing this is not easy. It’s like searching through a McDonalds dumpster to find the one tightly wrapped, untouched hamburger that you know statistically must be there. This is true whether you’re on the left searching through the right’s material or on the right searching through the left’s material.
Anyway, I will continue to post my blogs even though I feel like I’m shouting on a deserted planet on which I am the only living soul. However, what I will stop doing is trying to convince my Trumpian friends they are wrong. I understand now that it is pointless. I know now that unless they actually ask for my opinion, they aren’t interested in it. Besides, they all know where to find it if they want it. It’s on my blog for all to see.
