Chapter 126 – Where Are We Now?

In the wake of the attempted coup by Trump insurgents, it is tempting to call for the voting out of office, all Republicans in the US Congress, who at one time or another, enabled Trump’s lawless behavior by their action or inaction, on the grounds that in so doing, they were complicit in the attempt to overthrow of the duly elected government. Certainly, there should be some type of recall movement in Texas and Missouri for the removal of Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley from office. The same can be said of all other congresspersons that sought to overturn the election. Mind you, the action they were taking in effect, acknowledged that the election was legitimate, but sought to overturn the results anyway.

But the one thing I’ve come to understand from this incident is that for our two party system of democracy to work, a viable and ethical Republican and Democratic Party must be in place. How forgiving the public should be of all the Republicans who coward in the face of Trump’s threat to primary them out of office if they dared not bend to his will, will depend on whether or not they continue their obstructionist ways when Biden takes office and begins to implement the measures that need to be taken to repair the infrastructure of the institutions we depend on for our country to function efficiently, that Trump and his cronies and enablers have torn down.

It’s important that the government hold Trump legally responsible for what happened Wednesday for a number of reasons, none of which have anything to do with revenge or retribution. It needs to happen because the first step in re-establishing the integrity and credibility of our government and nation is to stand up to the fascist, racist, and white supremacist thugs that have been driving our nation’s agenda for the past four years. It is that, perhaps 15 or 20 % of white Americans, who have emboldened Trump to do everything detrimental he has done to the American people and our standing in the world. To not hold him accountable is tantamount to announcing to the world that those people are still in control and are still running the country. Not only should Trump be removed from office, but he should be prosecuted for his crimes, all his pardons should be reviewed to determined if corruption played any part of their issuance and those pardons should be rescinded if determined to be part of the conspiracy and corruption Trump is being prosecuted for. Hatred and white supremacy will always be with us, but it is important that by our actions, we drive them back into the woodwork where they belong. I hope the American people now understand that setting aside time tested democratic values and norms to appease some extremist group who’s stated views are undemocratic and contrary to the peaceful coexistence of all Americans, for short term political gain, is to subvert the entire democracy and ultimately will result in what we witnessed on January 6th. That incident was a mild version of what we have to look forward to if we continue in that way. I have been warning for years that an American civil war would be more like the civil war in Syria than the war we fought in the 1860s. I hope all Americans got a sense of what that will be like after what happened this past Wednesday.

There is a bright side to what happened. The behavior of what we have been crediting as being salt of the earth Americans for the past four years, has crystalized in a way not possible by any other means, the glue that has held together the Trump coalition. There now can be no doubt that the 70 plus million mostly white people who voted for Trump did so because they fear America is loosing its identity as a white country run by white people. The lack of police response, and the gentle way the police and guardsmen herded all the naughty white people away from the capital they had just stormed, like kindergarteners coming back late from recess, contrasted with their bellicose reaction to the mostly peaceful and lawful protest of mostly black people in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd, could not make that fact any clearer.

The good news is now, finally after 400 years, it’s completely out in the open for the entire world to see. It can’t be explained away by concerns about the economy or abortion. Now that it’s in the open, we can begin the healing dialog about race in the United States. We can ask empowering questions like, why is America so out of step with the rest of the world in seeing itself as white, when the fact is nowhere in the world is anyone purely anything. In fifty years, it will be difficult to look at any human being and identify which country he/she is from by skin color or hair texture alone. I will begin to explore that and related questions in the coming posts. It is my hope that in the coming years, January 6, 2021 will mark the beginning of the end the racial and cultural hypocrisy, and the end of the cast system mentality of America.
