Sadly, I was right about many of the things I’ve said over the years. Mostly, I’ve been saying that the majority of white people in the United States define the word “security” as their ability to dominate and impose their will on people of color, especially black people. What you have to understand about that last statement is that it is not the absolute truth in the sense that the majority of white people see that in them. No one is the villain in his or her own Hollywood movie and most of them don’t see that in themselves. Never the less, by virtue of the closeness of the election, and the fact that Biden didn’t win hands down in the face of the worst presidential performance in history is evidence of the truth of what I said. Unless you consider embracing hate groups and doing everything possible to undermine democracy a virtue, my premise for the reason they voted for him is the most logical one.
What I was wrong about was my belief that logic and common sense would override the fear of all things not Caucasian. All Americans, white, black and in between, who voted for Biden are probably feeling like they are living in Nazi Germany today, given the rude awakening that close to half of America appears to be committed the fascist ideology that has been promoted and carried out by the current administration. So given those opinions as a backdrop, here is my message of hope to all those who voted for Biden.
First of all, you must keep in mind that the election was very close in southern states that historically have been staunchly Republican. Most of that was due to the entrance of young people into the political arena. Young people cannot afford the luxury of the deluded position of the Republicans on everything from climate science to the need for effective birth control measures and reproductive health and freedom of choice for women. As more young people enter the political arena, the more difficult it will be for Republicans to maintain their hold on the so called battle ground states. That is why we all must continue to fight for the freedoms and the values we fought for in this past election. While we can’t lose our compassion and hope for the many misguided Trump supporters, who apparently would rather die than give up their fascist values, we must remain resolute in our belief that they are completely wrong and continue to network, and canvas door to door and do the hard work of building a constituency that supports our values and our vision for America, as we did in this past campaign. This is hard, frequently unheralded work, driven only by the passion of your convictions and the desire to do good work for America. It requires the energy of youth and the guidance of mature experience and the willingness to give up old ideas of political strategy in favor of what actually works.
To black Americans, I would remind you of what I’ve said in the past. I have said that our unique experience as slaves and victims of Jim Crow has evolved us into being the conscience of America. Going forward, we must make ourselves more credible in that role. We must become the most informed voters in America. We must be activists to the point of personally meeting everyone in our local and state governments from the register of deeds to the governor of our state. We must commit to looking the part of respected people of influence whether we consider ourselves to be so or not. We must exemplify that in both our appearance and speech. We must all learn the language of politics and politicians. While this requires getting out of our comfort zones for many of us, it carries the benefit of the fact that it is more difficult to deny justice to someone you know personally than to a caricature of what that person thinks represents who you are. We must become both politically educated and most expert in the use of firearms, even as we lobby for more sensible gun control measures. That is part of the new political language we must learn to speak. You cannot talk to politicians about guns if you know nothing about them yourself. America will never give up its guns and if you want to be seen as an American, you too must arm yourself and learn how to use those arms. There is no more respected human being on Earth than a well educated, politically knowledgeable and well armed black person.
As progressive Americans, we must all do what we can to save this country from itself. I realize that I am just an ordinary person, without the fame that would lead a large number of people to be interested in me enough to read these thoughts from my biographical perspective. Still I continue to speak out in the hope that my comments inspire or influence even one or two people to take positive action to better their lives and the life of our country. My comments must at be making some people uncomfortable. Recently, this blog was attacked by some political meme in an attempt to ruin the software using tactics to vile and full of debauchery to mention. It may have been local or from Russia. Who knows? In any event, I will continue to share these thoughts as long as I think they can be of benefit to those of you who read it. These are times when we must all remain steadfast and committed to our convictions, no matter what.
