The passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg is particularly difficult for me. There are certain people in our lives who are so meaningful that it is hard to imagine life without them. Dr. Ginsberg was one such person. The news of her death caused me to relive the night of my own wife’s passing a year and a half ago. The shock and the hollow, nauseating feeling brought on by the instant awareness that the person you depended on to make life worth living will be gone forever, leaves you with a sense of impending doom that’s hard to explain to anyone who has not themselves experienced it. I sense that three quarters of the population of this country is experiencing something akin to that feeling today in the wake of our loss of Justice Ginsberg.
Her loss does more than just deprive us of her stellar public service. It thrusts us into a new era in which defiance of government and government policy may soon be the order of the day in our country. The Supreme Court has become an ultra partisan entity in which 90% of its rulings follow party lines. Like the Republican Senate, the court no longer even pretends to have an interest in fairness and what’s best for the country as a whole. The Republican majority on the Court rules strictly on the basis of the narrow, neo fascist and religious agendas of the Republican Party. Accordingly, those of us who still have an interest in maintaining our democracy can’t just sit around wringing our hands and talking about how terrible Mitch Mc Connell and Donald Trump are. Now is the time for us to act, and make sure the opposition knows in no uncertain terms the majority of Americans will not continue to allow the current rogue government to have its way with us.
The first thing that needs to happen is Joe Biden and Kamala Harris must immediately announce that their first order of business if elected will be to add two new members to the Supreme Court if Republicans attempt to ramrod a Trump appointee to the Court before the election or before the inauguration of Joe Biden if Trump losses. Along with that, the Democrats in the Senate must do everything they can to thwart any effort to process a Trump appointee. That is the only way to make up for the two positions on the Court that will have been stolen from Democrats at that point.
Secondly, we must put the opposition on notice that efforts will be made by all the blue states to cease to comply with federal law if Trump succeeds in subverting a fair election through voter suppression and unjust ballot disqualification. If necessary, we must cripple the US economy by national strikes of meat packers and delivery services and other industry comprised of below living wage workers, which will necessarily hurt all Americans equally. All America must know that no American will be safe and secure if the current rogue administration is allowed to continue to undermine the law and the Constitution. If we truly want to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg, that is the way we must do it.
