It’s hard to believe what America has gone through in the past four years. It began with chaos in the transportation industry with the Muslim travel ban. Things went downhill from there. We had the white supremist Charlottesville murder as we watched in horror as the President of the United States all but endorsed the actions of the racists. Then there was the cold hard evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 elections and Trump’s denial and out right lies about that and the alleged sexual assaults he committed against dozens of women and his calling them and anyone who sided with them the most vile and vulgar characterizations of the kind you would expect to hear from a common street thug. Then came his all out assault on healthcare for millions of Americans, including his own constituents. Then came the numerous disruptions of congressional budget packages to forward his egotistical agenda to build a worthless wall at taxpayer’s expense. Then we witnessed the horror of babies tortured by separating them from their parents. Then the obscene tax relief for the richest Americans in the country neglecting badly needed infrastructure projects and his trade war with China that threatens to bankrupt who knows how many of small farmers (given his support of the corporate food and fossil fuel industries, that may actually be his goal). We watched helplessly as he gutted all the agencies put in place to safeguard our environment, our food, our education, our housing, our health and even our intelligence community and State Department, while at the same time, promoting the very fossil fuel industry that is instrumental in destroying all of those things. We’ve watched his blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law in pardoning his convicted felon political cronies and himself thumbing his nose at the emoluments laws and laws against using foreign agents for political gain. Finally, we saw the results of four years of presidential advocacy for the use of violence against perceived political opponents (especially the press and black people) culminating in mass shootings against Jews, gays, hispanics and blacks, and to the extent that many in police departments throughout the country felt they had a Constitutional right to murder and torture black people with impunity.
And then there came ultimate atrocity – the deliberate, and at first, denial and then confusion and misinformation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic to further enhance his standing with his hardcore supporters. Incredibly, he is now trying to spin it as though he was thinking of the American people when issuing his lies and deceptions. In point of fact, the only people he’s been fighting for since he took office is a tribe of about 50 million white people and a few million misguided minorities of color who have in someway blinded themselves to pernicious effects of his polices on their own people.
I could write a book on the many ways he has caused Americans to suffer and fret during his tenure as president, and many books have already been written, so I won’t go any farther. The question is, have the majority of all Americans forgotten all of this? Is our attention span so short that if we happen not to be experiencing the pain of Trumpism by the time we’re ready to vote, will we again have the kneejerk reaction to vote for the status quo and Donald Trump, thus assuring an end to our democracy?
Call me crazy, but I have a gut feeling that America is not willing to give up on itself. I think America is ready to tackle all its problems of infrastructure, environment, healthcare, social injustice and income equality right now. All we need is a president who will get out of the way. We need someone to set an agenda and send his people out into local communities to explain exactly how and what’s needed to accomplish those things. I have no doubt that once the demagoguery is set aside, the American public will demand from their politicians, whether they be Republican or Democrat, local or federal, that they do what’s necessary to carry out a well defined agenda by the executive, with bipartisan input. We need a leader who will get out of the way of what the overwhelming majority of Americans say they want. Joe Biden is our only option for that – he is exactly what’s needed at this time in history. We don’t need another hero. We just need another way out of the Trump Dome.
