In my last post, I discussed BRAD (an acronym that stands for Beleaguered Republicans Afraid of Democrats). I described BRAD as well meaning but conflicted in his views on how to get rid of Donald Trump without putting his time honored traditions (as defined by the Republican Party) at risk. Today, I want to talk about another faction of the Republican Block. So you’re clear on exactly whom I’m talking about, I must review the basic demographics again.
The entire Republican Party represents about 40% of the total electorate at the present time. One quarter of that 40%, or 10% of the total electorate are BRADs. About three quarters of that 40%, or 30% of the total electorate are those hard core Trump supporters who will vote for Trump, no matter what he says or does. Today, I’d like to take a crack at identifying the make-up of that group of hardcore Trump supporters who make up that 30% of the total electorate. Two thirds of that group can be defined by their politics as Christian Fundamentalists (20% of the total electorate). The other third (10% of the total electorate) of the group practice the politics of white supremacy and racial hatred. The faction I want to talk about in this post is the Christian Fundamentalists.
Christian Fundamentalists are one-issue voters. All their political motivation stems from their position on abortion rights. They have allowed themselves to be manipulated into believing that the sole basis for the judgment they receive in the hereafter will be their position on abortion rights. Evangelical clergy and rightwing politicians have steadily and relentlessly applied the manipulation to this group over the past 40 years to foster that belief. Their arguments have no basis in science, fact or biblical text. Yet they have managed to convince almost a third of the population of the United States that nothing else they do in life matters except that they are on the right side of this issue. So zealous are their disciples on this issue that they have been willing to allow the infrastructure of the country crumble, the environment to deteriorate, public education to deteriorate, their healthcare to deteriorate, their nutrition and water supply to deteriorate, their children friends and other relatives to become drug addicted and their own economic welfare to be placed in jeopardy. All this begs the question, how did the rightwing elements of this country so thoroughly and effectively indoctrinate so many to become Christian Fundamentalists on the basis of this single issue? I think the answer is pretty simple although the tactics were as clever as they were pernicious.
The Jessie Helms and the Pat Robertsons of the world managed to tie denial of abortion rights and old fashion American tradition together, as though the two couldn’t exist without each other. They have convinced their followers that not only is allowing legal abortion a sin against God, but the destruction of a major pillar supporting American culture and tradition. Over the years, they have been able to associate all of the problems with American society with abortion and have been able to spin it as evidence of the breakdown of the moral fabric of our society. They have gone to great lengths, in ways that border on the absurd to find “evidence” to suggest that even a day old human fetus can display signs of personality. They have simplified their follower’s obligation to be stewards of American society and culture to one thing – resisting abortion rights. Once you succeed into convincing someone that God is against abortion and turning support of their belief into a crusade against those who appose them, you now can associate anything your blaspheming, infidel Democrat adversaries promote, believe or advocate, into sins against God, whether it be gun control, or universal healthcare, or mandatory living wage requirements. If the infidels want it, it can’t be good.
The rightwing, segregationist element of American society has been able to sell this bill of goods for one reason – the systematic destruction, and re-segregation of the public school system in this country. If you fail to properly educate people, you make room for the indoctrination of them into whatever you want them to believe. We now have a government that is basing much of its policy and decision making not on facts and scientific evidence, but on the myths and legends of the religion of the people in charge. This is dangerous because even people who claim to be of the same religion may have different interpretations of that religion at any given time. You don’t know what you have from one day to the next. I’m not against religion, but like the founders of this nation, I’m against religion determining the laws and rules I have to live by. Having a culture based on shared religious values is not the same as having a government that favors one particular religious point view.
I know it is pointless to try to reason with the Christian Fundamentalist faction of Trump nation. The wall of indoctrination reinforced by Fox News and the other right wing media is almost impregnable. The majority of them never hear a dissenting point of view against any of the religious dogma manufactured by those media and the evangelical demigods. But if somehow I could get their ear, I would remind them of a very well known story in the gospel. As the story goes, on the day Christ was crucified, Pontius Pilot asked a brutally chastised Jesus, “Is it true that that you have said your god’s rule over Jerusalem supersedes Cesar’s rule over it?” implying that Christ advocated that Cesar had no right to tax the people. Christ’s reply was “Render to Cesar what is Cesar’s. My Father only cares for the souls of all who believe in Him”. I can think of no more un-Christ-like thing to do than to compel by force of law and arms that a woman do something other than what she desires with the body that God has given to her, including by extension, her own unborn child. To the extent that the unborn child cannot exist naturally except through its connection to its mother tells me that the child’s future is entrusted to its mother by divine right, and no one but its mother decides if it lives or dies. It’s an awesome responsibility for the mother to carry, but it is her right to carry it. There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence the mother by sincere, nonthreatening persuasion to choose life for the child, but not by force of law. Better to be like St. Paul, who dedicated his entire Christian life to persuading gentiles to accept Christ as their savior. He did not use his influence to convince Cesar to compel them by force of arms to accept Christ. He did it by his passion and sincerity, powered by what he believed was the truth in what he was saying. The fact that you feel it necessary to do so by brute force of law and punishment is indicative of your lack of faith in what you claim to be universal reality.
It seems the demigods who inflame the passions of the faithful over this issue do so out of the belief that they can compel poor white female proletariat produce more babies to maintain the dominance of the “white” race (wealthy and middle class white women will not nearly be effected as much as poor women of all races). I hope that’s not the reason. If it is, shame on them. We are all part of the human race. There is no need to artificially favor one group over another. The lack of common sense logic in that kind of thinking is yet another example of the consequences of destroying the public education system. I hope that somehow, God leads the Christian Fundamentalist faction of Trump nation to reclaim the moral high ground of which they have bankrupted themselves by their support of Donald Trump, and walk into the light of compromise on the issue of abortion and vote against Trump in 2020.
